Did you know that Egyptian language is the longest lasting language? It survived from 3000 B.C. to the 11th century. Almost no one speaks this language any more. Only about 20 people speak it now. But people are still interested in this culture. Clothing, language, farming are all part of this interesting culture.
Cloth
The ancient Egyptian people used to wear completely white linen tunics with drapes and loin clothes. What clothes you wore depended on what society you were in. For example, if you were from rich society, you might wear a white linen tunic with some very expensive gold jewelry. If you were poor, you might wear just a worn out old tunic. Or, if you were in middle society, you might wear, for example, not the best linen tunic, but better than the poor. The reason that the rich people wore better clothes than the poor was to show that they had power. The reason that the poor wore old worn out clothing was because they couldn't afford it.
The Egyptians all used the Nile river for farming. It was very useful for irrigation. They grew lots of things such as fig trees, wheat, and barley. The Pharaoh used rich peasants to do farming on the good land. The peasants had the jobs of reapers or gleaners. The reapers went through the fields first and they reaped the wheat. The gleaners went after the reapers and picked up the wheat that fell on the ground. The ancient Egyptians had these farming tools winnowing scoops, mattocks, flint bladed sickles, and plows. Winnowing means to get the debris off the grain.
The ancient Egyptian language was the longest surviving language. It was used from 3000 B.C. to the 11th century. They drew pictures and turned them into a language. The pictures are known as hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics are found in and on tombs and stones. Egyptian is one of the oldest recorded languages known. The pyramid texts were the largest body of literature written at that time.
The Egyptian language is mostly gone but people still are interested in the culture it is from. People go to museums to see Egyptian clothing, farming items, and hieroglyphics. King Tut is as famous as any other well known leader. The Egyptian artifacts still amaze people today, even though they are over thousand years old. The Egyptians still influence us today. With out the inspiration they give us today, our culture would be much poorer.
